Do I need a permit for shop signage in Dubai, and how long does the whole thing take?

Yes — external commercial signage in Dubai requires approval before installation, and the route depends on where your premises sit. A mainland shop under Dubai Municipality follows the Municipality's signage rules on dimensions, projection and illumination, and the application is tied to your trade licence. A unit inside a mall carries a second layer: the mall's own identity manual, which usually fixes sizes, lighting type and night-only installation windows, and sometimes requires an approved installer. A free zone premises goes through that zone's authority instead of the Municipality. On timing, fabrication is the predictable part — five to seven working days for interior signage, ten to fifteen for a 3D-letter shopfront, up to three weeks for large outdoor work. The approval is the variable, typically one to four weeks. The practical sequence is to submit the application and begin fabrication at the same time, so the sign is finished when approval lands rather than starting afterwards.

Larger structures where the engineering matters more than the finish. Wind loading calculated into the frame, marine-grade fixings where the site is near the coast, and access planned before fabrication because a sign that cannot be installed safely is not a sign.

Screens, and the structures that hold them. PERMITS AND APPROVALS

Three routes, depending on where you sit.

This is the part that delays Dubai signage projects, and which route applies to you is decided by your premises rather than by your sign.

Mainland premises — Dubai Municipality

A shop or office on the mainland follows the Municipality's signage requirements covering dimensions, projection from the facade, illumination type and how the sign relates to the building. The application ties to your trade licence, so the licence details and the sign artwork must agree exactly — a trade name on the sign that differs from the licence is a common and avoidable rejection.

Mall unit — two layers, not one

A mall unit answers to the mall's identity manual on top of any statutory requirement. That manual typically fixes the sign zone, permitted sizes, illumination type and installation hours, and some malls mandate an approved installation contractor. We request the manual before design starts, because designing first and reading it second means designing twice.

Free zone premises — the zone authority

Premises in DMCC, IFZA, Meydan, RAKEZ, JAFZA, DIFC, ADGM or twofour54 go through that zone's own authority rather than the Municipality. Requirements differ zone to zone, so we confirm which applies at survey rather than assuming.

Arabic on the sign

Commercial signage in the UAE is expected to carry Arabic, and a sign in English alone risks refusal. Treating Arabic as a design element from the first sketch, rather than squeezing it in after rejection, is both faster and produces a better-looking sign.

We prepare the permit file — dimensioned drawings, elevation photography, material specification and compliance checking — ready for submission, and we coordinate with mall management where a unit is involved. The formal application remains in the name of the licence holder. Approval timelines sit with the authority, so we plan around them rather than promising them.

BUILT FOR THE CLIMATE

What the Gulf climate does to a cheap sign.

Signs fail here for reasons that do not apply in temperate markets. Specifying against these at the start costs little; discovering them in year two costs the whole sign.

Humidity and salt near the coast

Coastal humidity corrodes standard fixings and finds its way into enclosures. Marine-grade stainless fixings and properly sealed housings are specified as standard on coastal sites rather than offered as an upgrade.

UV on printed and coloured faces

Untreated print and low-grade acrylic fade visibly within a season. UV-stable materials and correct film grades keep colour through the warranty period rather than only through the handover photographs.

Heat inside illuminated housings

An enclosed sign in a Dubai summer runs far hotter than its components expect. Ventilated housings, correctly rated power supplies and derated LED loading are what stop a sign dimming or failing in its second August.

Dust and cleaning access

Dust dulls faces and blocks vents. We design with a cleaning path in mind, because a sign nobody can reach is a sign nobody maintains.

Yes, and it is where a single fabricator matters most. We produce one approved sample first, then run the quantity to that specification, so branches genuinely match instead of varying with whichever workshop made each one.

Do you maintain or repair existing signs?

Yes. Most failures are lighting units or power supplies, both replaceable without touching the structure. We survey first and say honestly whether repair beats replacement — with older signs it sometimes does not, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a repair twice.
